Ruby Is Jewel In Catalyst Crown

Congratulations to Ruby Lee and her team: Made & Worn has been awarded Catalyst Business of the Year 2017!

On receiving the award, company founder and self-confessed knit-a-holic, Ruby said: “Since joining the Catalyst programme, the support we’ve received has been invaluable. The Catalyst team has guided us through the difficult task of refining our early idea into a credible business. It is great to have the backing of the Science Park and to be recognised for the hard work we’ve put in during the programme.”

As regular readers will know, the start-up won a place in the Catalyst Centre business incubator in September. It was the first consumer craft-led concept to join the programme and reflects the crafting boom sweeping the nation.

Combining her background in systems engineering with her passion for knitting, Ruby came up with her idea to build an app for knitters which would solve the common problems that the UK’s seven million knitters face with existing patterns, while giving them the freedom to unleash creativity by designing their own.

The University of Southampton Science Park’s CEO Peter Birkett and fellow judges were impressed with the considerable progress that the company made during its time at Catalyst.

Peter said: “Made & Worn was awarded Catalyst Business of the Year because of the impressive progress the company founder Ruby Lee has made on developing her value proposition during the course of her time here. She was particularly commended for setting up special interest groups which helped to hone her understanding of her potential marketplace in terms of determining demand for her product and identifying key market segments.”

We wish Ruby, and all of her fellow Catalyst 2017 companies, the very best of luck in bringing their innovations to market in the near future.

Ruby Lee’s business idea struck her when she was making a jumper! Fed up with making mistakes and constantly unpicking and re-knitting, she thought ‘there has to be a better way to do this’!

Great business ideas can strike at any time! If you have an innovative science or technology-led idea and the drive to build a business, why not apply for the Catalyst programme?  Applications are now open for the 2017-18 cohort here.

What have you got to lose?
